Anesthesia department stands as a perfect paradigm and it refers to the specialty pertaining to partial or complete loss of sensation with or without loss of consciousness by administration of a drug, to mitigate pain especially during surgical procedures.
Anesthesiologist manages the course of a surgical patient from preoperative period to post operative phase inclusive of critical care.
Deviating from its core – anesthesiology services, the field has extended into Theatre Based Anesthesia Services, Post Operative Care Unit (PACU), managing high dependency unit like critical care (Ventilator support), and further extending our services into the integral Management of accident and emergency. The department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care at Navodaya Medical College is integral part of the hospital and research centre. The department has 12 operation theaters in sushrutha complex and one O.T at casualty side attached to 12 bedded ICU 12 sophisticated major and minor operation theater in sushrutha complex are in three floors : Each floor consist 4 operation theaters and the theaters are distributed to cater all the requirements of allied surgical departments in this college.
The department has specialised anaesthesia care for all surgical procedures from diverse departments.
Twelve operation Theatres function daily, and all are equipped with complete anaesthesia machines with state-of-the art latest ventilator, respiratory gas monitors, pulse oximeters and haemodynamic monitoring system. Each OT has Anesthetic Boyle’s machine with minimum intra op patient monitoring like BP. NIBP, pulse oxymetry and two ‘Anavent’ intra op anesthesia ventilators.

The department is involved in evaluating patients for Anaesthetic fitness, maintenance of the sophisticated operation theater complex, and management of patients in critical care units, apart from academics. The faculties are involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of Anesthetic, intensive care, preoperative medicine (including acute pain management), chronic pain management, resuscitation, safety and quality in healthcare and related medico legal issues etc. Departmental Activities in the year 2009: Inter departmental seminar was conducted by Dr. D.S Ramchandra Prof & Head anaesthesia for the departments of OBG, Paediatrics and Anesthesia department on 20th Nov 2009 on the subject “ Analgesia for Labor & Delivery”
